The Story of Fung: From loner to team player 2022-09-08

A celebration party is supposed to be full of joy. However, Fung caused his mother to feel heartbroken at the party. Fung hid in a corner to clean up while all the other children were having fun aside. “It hurt me. He was not good at joining others and what he did was meaningless. But we were fortunate to join the “Learning Buddies” service programme, which has helped Fung not to isolate himself from people any longer,” said Fungs mother.

Fung was rigid in the past. For instance, he had his own way to play with toys, always stuck to a fixed walking route, and would easily lose his temper whenever unsatisfied. Fung was also afraid of strangers, especially when other children invited him to play together, he would instantly stay away from them. The mother recalled, “His behaviours made me angry and depressed. Our family was filled with gloom at that time. I did not want him to spend a lonely school life. I hoped he could make some changes.”

After receiving Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) treatment, Fung acted less rigid and his compliance and compatibility improved as a whole. The mother has witnessed his changes, “As Fungs concentration and language skills have enhanced, he can sit properly in a class, dare to talk to strangers, and comply with different game rules now. He even taught me new games at home which built a better connection within our family, so I heaved a sigh of relief.” Along the way, the mother gradually put aside her anxiety.

Under the guidance of therapists, Fung has started to enjoy playing with peers. On his graduation day, the therapists presented “The Most Collaborative Award” to recognise his improvement. Everyone believes that his maturity and calmness will bring him a happy school life onwards!

Fungs mother was invited to share her perspective on ASD and ABA services with Autism Partnership Foundation (operating in Hong Kong) (APF, HK). Fung is a past beneficiary of APF, HK.
